Your car was exposed to a flood? Prioritize your safety and ask for professional guidance before moving it. To coordinate a consultation in Hialeah, write us for WhatsApp and indicates exposure to water.

After a flood, the appearance is not enough

NHTSA recommends that a vehicle be evaluated before it is in place: damage may not be seen at all. The body is dry does not confirm that it is safe to drive. Do not try to start, load or manipulate electrical components to check its condition. It requests professional instructions and coordinates the appropriate transfer if appropriate.

In hybrid or electric vehicles, exposure to water may involve electrical and fire risks. If there is smoke, abnormal heat or a dangerous situation, stay away and contact emergencies. Do not open or manipulate the high voltage battery. This guide does not replace an eye-to-eye assessment.

What information to send when requesting help

Prepare a brief description without getting close to an unsafe area. No need to diagnose the damage or buy parts before you consult. You can copy this list and complete only what you know:

  • Year, mark and model of the vehicle; indicates whether it is electric, hybrid or combustion.
  • Date and place of exposure to water.
  • If it was parked or moving and if it went off.
  • If you tried to turn on later and what happened, without trying again.
  • Photographs taken previously from a safe place, if any.
  • Current location and if you have already spoken to your insurance or road assistance.

He describes facts: "the water came to this part of the door" is more useful than saying "the engine was damaged." Do not publish identity documents, complete policies or personal data in social media comments. Share only the necessary data on the appropriate channel.

Before authorizing a review or repair

He asked what evaluation was proposed, what the estimated one included and what steps required additional authorization. Not all vehicles and all exposures needed the same procedure. An exchange of messages did not allow it to promise that the car was recoverable, safe or covered by a policy.

If you are evaluating buying a used one, report any known flood background and see our guide to prepare a pre-purchase inspectionA quote and a documentary record do not replace the technical evaluation.

English: a car exposed to floodwater

Do not start a flood-exposed vehicle just to test it. It starts a professional assessment before use; visible dryness does not prove safety. Hybrid and electric vehicles require particular caution around high-voltage components. Stay away from smoke or abnormal heat and contact emergency services when there is immediate danger.

When requesting help, share the year, make, model, powertrain type, exposure date and what happened. Mention any attempted restart without repeating it. Ask about the assessment scope, transport arrangements and written authorization before repairs. A message is not a diagnosis or a guarantee of insurance coverage.
